Association By-Laws

The WYHA by-laws serve as the association's governing guidelines and foundation for the program. The WHYA program's purpose is to promote, sponsor, provide facilities for, and organize a program dedicated to recreation, sportsmanship, and excellence in hockey for youth in school district #284 in order to make them better citizens. The by-laws can be viewed on the link below.

Board of Directors Monthly Meeting

The WYHA Board of Directors meet monthly on the first Monday to review business updates and align on key decisions.

The BOD monthly minutes are archived here.

Interested in getting involved?

The WYHA Board of Directors are elected annually in May and serve 3 year terms.  In the spring time, a call for interested parties will be sent to the association.  For more information on the BOD  you can reference the By-Laws. If you are interested in  learning more about serving on the Board or in a Coordinator position please reach out to Contact@WayzataHockey.org.

Additionally there are many roles that support the association outside of the BOD and we welcome those interested in sharing their skillset to help our program. Most of the leadership positions are filled by parents/guardians of players who are first and foremost passionate about the program and their skaters experience and willing to share their time and unique skills with the association.

If you see an area that could benefit from your organization, management or leadership please reach out.

Director of Hockey Operations Role

The WYHA Director of Hockey Operations will work closely with the Board to establish and execute a comprehensive hockey program with an emphasis on player development and a singular goal of providing the best hockey experience for all WYHA players and families.

WYHA is one of the largest youth hockey associations in the entire country. Over the years, the task of overseeing tryouts, recruiting and supporting non-parent coaches, monitoring, providing feedback and practice plan guidance to parent coaches, and establishing and overseeing a consistent, thorough skills development program has become too large for volunteers to handle by themselves. Our expectation is that by bringing on a full-time Director of Hockey Operations the result will be a much better experience for our players and families at all levels of play.

After a thorough interview and evaluation process, we’re excited to announce Miles Death as our new Director of Hockey Operations!

Miles has been with WYHA since his mite hockey days.  He is currently an assistant coach on the Wayzata High School staff and works year-round in hockey skill development for Wayzata Hockey Clinics, Minnesota Lakers, Individual Skills Clinics, and several other youth associations around the Twin Cities.

Since beginning his coaching career in 2016 with the Wayzata Squirt A’s, Miles has worked with players at all levels and developed a coaching philosophy based on individual skill development and introducing hockey concepts at a young age.  He’s thrilled to bring his love for hockey back to his alma mater Wayzata, and continue working with many of the coaches who shaped his own playing career.

Outside of coaching, Miles enjoys playing golf, hiking with his dog, and doing various projects around the house.  Miles has a B.S. in Mathematics from The University of South Dakota where he was a four-year member of the Men’s Golf Team.

Meet the Board of Directors

Jason Vinar

Some of my fondest memories are of playing youth hockey whether it was winning a big game, remembering how I dealt with adversity, or Nintendo’s Ice Hockey at the out of town tournaments.  I still play the game once a week with my friends to get a little exercise and socialize.  My goal is to make hockey that same positive experience for the kids and families in WYHA so they too develop a lifelong love of the sport and a sense of belonging and community.  I am currently in my 7th year on the board and have coached my 3 kids for 10 years across 17 different teams.

Michelle Ugurlu

While not growing up in the “State of Hockey” and having little experience with what that means, we are now all in.  I have two boys that play – a 2nd year Advanced Mite and a 2nd year Squirt. From the minute my older son said he met a new friend in Kindergarten, “and he plays hockey!”, I knew this was going to be an adventure. I’ve enjoyed the hockey community that WYHA has created and am so glad to be a part of the organization. Being on the board has offered me a way to be involved in something so rooted in our community. It is exciting to see the mites with their big smiles when they learn something new and transitioning to working together as a team. I am the Vice President of Administration and the Mite Director for the 2023-2024 season.

Christian Peterson

Mite Director for five years and have been coaching my two sons (currently a second-year squirt and a second-year PeeWee) for 9 years. I have been watching, playing, or coaching hockey since I was 4 years old and can’t think of a better way to repay all of the cherished memories and experiences in a lifetime of hockey than to give back by volunteering to support the sport I love in a fantastic community of dedicated parents and players. Please take a moment to thank all of the WYHA Board members if you see them around the rink - we have a group of incredibly dedicated people who work tirelessly to ensure our Association functions the way it should.

Jaclyn Hill

I am one of the newest WYHA board members, elected in Spring 2023.  My two boys have played at the Mite, PeeWee and Bantam levels while my husband coaches Junior Gold.  That means I’m both a hockey mom and coach’s wife.  My family has been part of the WYHA since January 2020 – moving to Minnesota from New Jersey.  It make perfect sense since all the men in my life are “all in” when it comes to hockey, if you can’t beat em’, join em’.  I am looking forward to contributing to the WYHA to the best of my abilities.

Nicholas Cook

I’ve been a WYHA board member since Spring 2019.  When I decided to run for a board position, I was looking for an opportunity to positively contribute to the organization as both of my sons were either involved or starting to get interested in playing hockey.  It’s been a rewarding experience to understand and refine the work that goes into creating the environment for our players and, ultimately, provide them opportunities to grow as hockey players and as teammates.

Mark Lavender

I’ve been a board member since Spring 2019 and I have 4 kids playing hockey.  They have all benefited greatly from this wonderful sport and so I decided to give back to the organization that has been so generous to my family.  I believe that youth sports and hockey in particular provide for outstanding personal athletic, social, and individual skill development.  Ultimately, while helping each child improve as a hockey player is a goal, it is ancillary to what I view as the primary objective of helping each person develop life skills and grow individually and in the community.  I am thrilled to be a part of the association and on top of my general board duties, I help out as the Goalie Development Director, working to ensure that we bring new goalies aboard and develop those that have already committed to the position.

Luke McGregor

While not playing Hockey as a Youth (I am a football guy) I was not aware of how great the sport of hockey is. I have two daughters that play hockey, my oldest daughter decided 3 years ago that she wanted to try hockey out even though she couldn’t skate! WYHA was welcoming and the amazing volunteer coaching staff was willing to develop her as a hockey player. Of course, her younger sister had to follow in her footsteps. Being part of Wayzata Hockey is an amazing asset to our family and I look forward to spreading the awesomeness of the sport.

Andy Nordseth

I have one boy still playing in the Wayzata Youth Hockey Association at the bantam level with another son that is playing at the high school level. It has been so exciting to watch them develop over the years, not only playing the game of hockey, but also the change in character due to the countless life-lessons experienced along the way.  I enjoy being active in my community and the WYHA offers just that.  This is my fourth year on the Board and I am excited to contribute the best I can.  My role is to represent WYHA on the District (D3) Board.  My primary duties include voting on behalf of WYHA, overseeing end-of-year tournaments that we host, serving on district sub-committees, participating at disciplinary hearings, and acting as the liaison between D3 and WYHA.

Ben Norton

I have been in and around hockey since I was 3 years old.  I grew up in St. Louis Park, MN and played high school hockey there before playing college hockey at Gustavus Adolphus College.  My family was part of my youths’ program/board for many years and I played against WYHA growing up and always envied their very large yet well run program.  I continue to play hockey post college and have never stop having a love for the game.  I want nothing more than to give back to my kids and many others what I spent a large part of my life developing.  I have 3 girls in the program ranging from ages 5 – 12 and watching them cultivate year in and year out is what it’s all about.  I want to thank all the families that are part of this program…nothing can be accomplished without their dedication and commitment to the game we all cherish so much.

Tia Senenfelder

I joined the WYHA board in 2019. Both of my kids started playing hockey here with no skating or hockey experience, yet watching their progression from the beginning of the season to the end was truly amazing to see. Learning the sport of hockey is in itself a great skill - but WYHA brings so much more. The teamwork, the camaraderie, the friendships with other families - it's all part of what makes the experience of being a WYHA family something special. As a member of the Board I bring my professional marketing experience to the association to help us strengthen our relationship with existing members and try to reach even more potential players that can experience all the great things hockey can bring to their kids’ lives.

Ryan Foltz

I have been coaching at Wayzata since both of my kids started playing and now have a 15U and 2nd year Squirt.  It's been an incredibly rewarding experience watching my own kids develop in a sport I love to watch and play but also rewarding to build friendships with other players, coaches and families.  Hockey really is a community sport and could not happen without the support our kids get from the amazing amount of volunteers that make it all happen.  I am new to the board this year and joined to have a better understanding of all of the aspects behind the scenes that help make WYHA an amazing place to develop as kids and play hockey.  I look forward to helping grow the sport of hockey and the good name that WYHA brings to the sport. Go Trojans!

Mike Morris

As a non-hockey playing hockey parent from outside of Minnesota, my wife and I were introduced to the sport by our two daughters and their desire to begin playing 7-years ago. Needless to say, we were immediately overwhelmed by what it means to be a hockey parent, but jumped into it feet first and have relished in the benefits it has brought to our family and how the community has helped to shape our daughters and turn them into the young ladies they are today. I am currently in the 3rd year of my first term on the WYHA board and have had various levels of activity within the association as a Blueline Volunteer providing Scoreboard and Gamesheet training to new families and now serving as an at large board member and supporting Team Gear design development and working with our third party vendors. I enjoy working with our board to improve the functioning of our association and developing new ways to strengthen our program and provide new development opportunities to our kids.
