Student Coach Spotlight: Michaela
Michaela first laced up her skates in kindergarten after attending a “Try Hockey for Free” event at New Hope Ice Arena with her dad’s best friend’s daughter. From the moment she stepped onto the ice, she was hooked. Her favorite part of hockey is the sense of freedom she feels gliding across the rink — a place where her mind clears and she can simply enjoy the moment. She also loves the sport for the friendships it creates and the opportunity to meet new people.
One of the main reasons Michaela chose to become a student coach is because she remembers how much she looked up to older players when she was younger. Now, she hopes to be that same positive role model for today’s young skaters.
As a student coach, Michaela aims to grow her leadership and communication skills while helping skaters develop both on and off the ice. She’s excited to teach new skills — whether it’s a stick-handling move, a crossover, or simply helping a player gain confidence as they learn.
Her advice for young players is to never give up and always do their best, on the ice and off. She believes staying positive — toward yourself and others — makes all the difference.
Above all, Michaela is passionate about coaching because she loves seeing young players thrive and succeed with skills she has helped them learn.
